Harry Dunn, a former U.S. Capitol police officer who fought rioters on January 6th is set to run for Congress in Maryland.
According to reports, Dunn made the announcement on Friday, Jan 5th, a day before the three year anniversary of the Insurrection, which thousands of Trump supporters rushed the Capitol to dispute if Joe Biden’s 2020 presidency was legit.
“On January 6th, I defended our democracy from insurrectionists as a Capitol Police Officer,” he wrote on social media. “After President Biden honored me with the Presidential Citizens Medal. Today, I’m running for Congress to stop Trump’s MAGA extremists and ensure it never happens again,” he added.
In a recent interview, Dunn talked about how defending the U.S. Capitol against Trump supporters impacted his decision to run for Congress.
“I believe that as a Capitol Police Officer, I’ve exhausted everything that I could do in that role, in that capacity to fight, for accountability, to fight for justice, to preserve our democracy, to fight for a democracy,” he said.
He went to say that he holds Trump responsible for the Insurrection because he instigated the crowd. “I wanna do everything in my power that I can do to fight back against him,” Dunn said. “As a congressman, that gives me a seat at the table now to hold him accountable.”
Harry Dunn is looking to occupy the seat left vacant by Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes who represented Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District.
