The Senate passed a new prison reform bill called the First Step Act last night (Dec. 18) after prosecutors, defense attorneys, and activists urged Congress to implement the new law. CNN commentator Van Jones is thrilled about the bill, and called the Trump-backed piece of legislation a “Christmas miracle.” He also noted none of this would have happened without the help Kim Kardashian.

TMZ caught up with Jones in streets of Washington D.C. after the bill was passed with an 87 – 12 vote. When asked about Kim’s role and new interest in prison reform, the news commentator had nothing but good things to say.

“If Kim Kardashian had not gone to the White House to talk to Donald Trump, we would not have passed this bill. There will be 50,000 fewer [people] in federal prison less in prison because of this bill; 100{cf74dfb42c160c86fab84d92af628b92d0859125321fa10dc87be72131d49b21} of people locked up in federal prisons can come home a little bit earlier if they stay out of trouble; 50{cf74dfb42c160c86fab84d92af628b92d0859125321fa10dc87be72131d49b21} of them can come home a lot earlier if they work hard; 100{cf74dfb42c160c86fab84d92af628b92d0859125321fa10dc87be72131d49b21} of women are not gonna be shackled and mistreated.”

He contined, “Why? Because Kim Kardashian was willing to put her celebrity on the line for people she didn’t even know. Everybody who said she was being played and she was just being used for a photo opp – how you like me now?!”

NBC News explains that the new bill will “make America’s criminal justice system fairer, reduce overcrowding and save taxpayer dollars — much to the benefit of drug and non-violent offenders.”
