Venus + Serena Williams Will Compete Together In The US Open

Tennis legends Venus Williams and Serena Williams will play as a duo in the upcoming US Open. ESPN reports, “It will be the first time the sisters have played at a major together since the French Open in 2018,” and they received a “wild card for entry.”

Serena announced she’s retiring from tennis to spend more family time, and the US Open will reportedly be her official final match, Madame Noire reports. During an interview with TIME, after telling her daughter, Olympia, 5, that she was retiring from the sport, her baby girl’s response motivated her to change after the baby gave her a “fist-pumping yes.” Serena said the answer made her sad. She went on to say, 

“I’m ready for the transition. She went on to say she wants to be a better mother; she said, “I think I’m good at it, but I want to explore if I can be great at it.” Serena spoke on her grand tennis exit in a personal letter to Vogue. She said,

“These days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter. Olympia says this a lot, even when she knows I’m listening. Sometimes before bed, she prays to Jehovah to bring her a baby sister. (She doesn’t want anything to do with a boy!) I’m the youngest of five sisters myself, and my sisters are my heroes, so this has felt like a moment I need to listen very carefully to.”

The siblings will compete in the doubles on Wednesday (August 31). Sporting News points out, “in Grand Slam doubles finals; they are 14-0, the best unbeaten record in tennis history. They also have won three Olympic gold medals together.” In addition, the sisters will duke it out against Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova. The publication also notes the Williams sisters beat Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova in 2012 for the Wimbledon doubles title.
