Legendary sports announcer Greg Gumbel has passed away at 78 years old.
According to reports, Gumbel passed away after a long battle with cancer. In a statement released by his family said, “Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity.”
The statement continued, “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration, and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry.” Greg Gumbel is the older brother of Bryant Gumbel and he began working at CBS in 1989, In 1994, he left the company to work at NBC Sports but would return to CBS in 1998.
Throughout his career, Gumbel called two Super Bowls and has hosted numerous NCAA “March Madness” for many years. CBS Sports Network president and CEO, David Berson spoke about his former employee and said, “Greg broke barriers and set the standard for others to follow.” He continued, “It is an extremely sad day for all of us at CBS Sports and the entire sports community. We will miss Greg dearly, and send our deepest condolences to his wife Marcy, daughter Michelle, and his entire family.”
