In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, John Legend shared the story behind his first album credit, which was on Lauryn Hill’s acclaimed 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. At the time, Legend was still known by his birth name, John R. Stephens, and was a student at the University of Pennsylvania. He recounted how a friend from a church choir introduced him to Hill during a studio session where she was working on her debut solo project.

A Nervous Audition for John Legend

Legend described his impromptu audition for Hill: “I get on the piano just to show her what I could do. It was like a mini-audition.” Despite his nerves, his performance impressed Hill, leading her to invite him to play piano on the track “Everything is Everything.” This opportunity marked Legend’s first official recording credit.

Modest Compensation

When asked about payment for his contribution, Legend admitted he was uncertain about what to request. He sought advice from a friend who had interned in the music industry, who suggested asking for $500. Reflecting on this, Legend said, “I didn’t really know what to ask for, and I asked my friend who had been interning in the music business that summer.” This modest fee became his “claim to fame at school,” as he humorously recalled.

A Lasting Impact

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has left an indelible mark on the music industry, blending R&B, hip-hop, and soul. The album received critical acclaim and commercial success, solidifying Hill’s status as a groundbreaking artist.
