Audra McDonald Named Most Tony-Nominated Performer In History

Audra McDonald has made Tony Award history!

The Broadway veteran has become the most Tony-nominated performer in Broadway history. Playbill reports that the history was made after she was recently nominated for her role in the Broadway revival Gypsy. This new nomination puts her a number 11, setting her apart from the “10 nomination pack.” 

In 2014, she also became the most-awarded performer in Tony history by winning six awards. The actress received her first nomination in 1994 for her role as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel, and win an award for. She went on to win for her roles as well: 1996’s Master Class, 1998’s Ragtime, 2004’s A Raisin in the Sun, 2012’s Porgy and Bess, and 2014’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. 

Other nominations include 2000’s Marie Christine, 2007’s 110 in the Shade, 2020’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, and 2023’s Ohio State Murders. Audra McDonald is also the only performer to “win top honors in leading and featured categories for both musicals and plays.”

The Tony Nominations were revealed on Thursday, May 1, and the Awards will air on June 8 live from Radio City Music Hall starting at 8 PM. Cynthia Ervio will be the host for the night.
