A sworn affidavit from Jaquan Smith, Tory Lanez’s bodyguard and driver, has introduced new claims in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. Smith alleges that Megan’s former best friend, Kelsey Harris, was holding the gun when it discharged, contradicting previous testimonies.
New Affidavit Emerges
In a statement submitted to the California Court of Appeal, Smith recounted the events of July 12, 2020. He stated, “Kelsey Harris had a gun in her hands when Megan Thee Stallion was shot.” Smith claimed that Lanez attempted to disarm Harris during the incident.
Smith described the evening’s events, noting that after leaving Kylie Jenner’s residence, an argument ensued in the SUV. He alleged that Megan was the instigator and that tensions escalated when Lanez threatened to reveal his relationship with Megan to Harris.
Contradictory Testimonies
During the trial, Harris’s testimony was marked by inconsistencies. She initially told prosecutors she saw Lanez fire the gun but later recanted, stating, “I did not shoot Meg.” Harris also expressed feelings of betrayal and anxiety, citing postpartum issues and a recent death in her family.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, testified that Lanez shot her, stating, “I started walking away and I hear Tory yell, ‘Dance, b****.’ I froze. I just felt shock. I felt hurt.”
The jury also heard that Harris sent a text message shortly after the incident reading, “Help. Tory shot Meg. 911.”
Legal Implications
Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was convicted in December 2022 on charges including assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He is currently serving a 10-year sentence. His legal team has filed an appeal, citing Smith’s affidavit as new evidence.
