Megan Thee Stallion’s legal team has issued a sharp rebuttal to recent claims suggesting Tory Lanez may have been wrongly convicted in her 2020 shooting. Her attorney, Alex Spiro, responded Wednesday to assertions made by Unite the People, a nonprofit working alongside Lanez’s defense.
“Tory Lanez was tried and convicted by a jury of his peers and his case was properly adjudicated through the court system,” Spiro said in a statement to XXL. “This is not a political matter — this is a case of a violent assault that was resolved in the court of law.”
The response followed a press conference hosted by Walter Roberts, lead legal consultant for Unite the People. Roberts claimed new evidence had emerged that could exonerate Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence.
Nonprofit Alleges Alternate Shooter
Roberts revealed that his organization was approached by Bradley James, who allegedly served as a bodyguard for Kelsey Harris, Megan’s former friend and key witness in the case. According to Roberts, James claimed to have overheard Harris confess to firing the gun during the 2020 incident.
“Mr. James informed Unite the People that he was witness to the conversation Ms. Harris had where she stated she had the gun, she fired it three times,” Roberts told reporters. “Mr. Peterson never shot anybody… never even touched that gun. Never fired the gun.”
Despite this recent allegation, the original court proceedings concluded decisively. In December 2022, Lanez—real name Daystar Peterson—was convicted on three felony charges. Prosecutors said Lanez shot Megan in the feet while yelling, “Dance, b—h!” following an argument outside a Hollywood Hills party.
Lanez has consistently maintained his innocence, most recently posting a petition to social media asking California Governor Gavin Newsom for a pardon.
Earlier this week, Lanez reportedly survived a stabbing in prison that left him with 14 wounds and a collapsed lung. A statement on his Instagram noted he is now in recovery and “deeply thankful to God.”
As of now, Megan Thee Stallion has not personally commented on the new claims.
