Jonathan Daviss, best known for his breakout role as Pope Heyward in Outer Banks, has landed the lead role as Snoop Dogg in an upcoming biopic starring the legendary rapper himself. The 25‑year‑old actor’s selection marks a bold choice by Universal Pictures and Death Row Pictures.
The film will be directed by Craig Brewer. Brewer previously collaborated with Snoop in Dolemite Is My Name. Industry insiders say Brewer also wrote the script alongside Joe Robert Cole, acclaimed for Black Panther and The People vs. O.J. Simpson.
Snoop Dogg will produce the movie along with Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker. In a statement, Snoop called the partnership “a new beginning.” He noted he chose Daviss because of “raw talent” and emotional range. He added, “He feels it.”
Daviss, who starred in Netflix’s Do Revenge and became a household name in Outer Banks, said he felt “honored and humbled” by the opportunity. “I know how big this is,” he said. “I want to do Snoop justice.”
A Storied Life on Film
The upcoming film will explore Snoop’s journey from Calvin Broadus growing up in Long Beach, California, to becoming a chart‑topping West Coast rap icon and 16‑time Grammy nominee. It will cover the highs and lows of his career and his influence on hip-hop culture.
Craig Brewer told Entertainment Weekly that he envisions “an honest, gritty portrait” of Snoop’s life. He aims to capture both the music and the personal battles that shaped him.
Brewer’s filmmaking résumé includes indie hits like Hustle & Flow and Footloose. He brings credibility and sensitivity to the project.
Iconic Story, Iconic Soundtrack
While details remain under wraps, producers plan to include many of Snoop’s signature songs. A source familiar with the project said the script will lean heavily on his early recordings like Gin and Juice and Drop It Like It’s Hot.
Brian Grazer, co‑producer, said the film “will resonate with both die‑hard fans and new audiences.” He believes Daviss is “the perfect new voice.”
What’s Next?
Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2025. Universal Pictures is expected to release the film nationwide. More casting announcements are due soon.
For Daviss, this role represents the biggest leap of his career. As he steps into the shoes of the Doggfather, expectations are high.
Daviss summed up his excitement: “This isn’t just another role. It’s history in the making.”
