Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge stemming from a violent confrontation at a London nightclub, bringing a significant development to a criminal case that has followed the Grammy-winning singer for more than three years.
Brown entered a guilty plea Friday to one count of affray during a brief appearance at Southwark Crown Court. The charge relates to a February 2023 altercation at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district. Prosecutors had alleged Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw with a glass tequila bottle before the confrontation escalated.
As part of the proceedings, prosecutors said they would no longer pursue more serious allegations. Those included charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault causing actual bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon. Brown had previously denied those accusations.
Brown’s vocal coach and co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray during Friday’s hearing. Both men are scheduled to return to court for sentencing on Oct. 26. Under British law, the offense carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
Prosecutors Describe Alleged Violence
According to British prosecutors, the confrontation unfolded in front of numerous patrons inside the crowded nightclub. Authorities alleged Brown struck Diaw twice with a glass bottle before the violence continued elsewhere inside the venue.
In a statement released after the hearing, Senior Crown Prosecutor Claire Campbell condemned the incident.
“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice.”
Campbell continued:
“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly – with the police and partners across the criminal justice system – to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law.”
Authorities said the victim received treatment for head and knee injuries following the incident. Prosecutors also alleged surveillance cameras captured portions of the altercation.
Sentencing Scheduled for October
The legal proceedings nearly disrupted Brown’s international touring schedule after his arrest in Manchester in May 2025. Police detained the singer upon his return to the United Kingdom, more than two years after the nightclub incident.
Brown was initially held in custody before later securing release on bail. Court records show he agreed to a £5 million security payment, allowing him to continue his international performances while the criminal case remained pending.
Friday’s hearing lasted only a few minutes. Brown spoke primarily to confirm his identity and formally enter his guilty plea. Fans gathered outside the courthouse before and after the proceedings, with some cheering the singer as he departed.
The guilty plea eliminates the need for a lengthy jury trial that had been expected later this year. Instead, the court will focus solely on determining Brown’s sentence during the October hearing.
