Legendary group, Guy, is getting a revival.
Teddy Riley announced that R&B group, Guy, formed in 1987 by Riley, Aaron Hall, and Timmy Gatling — with Damion Hall later replacing Gatling, will be revamped as a newer version with new members.
Per You Know I Got Soul, the revamped lineup for Guy 2.0, includes Fred “Ljai” Robinson (who was a member of Motown group, Profyle), J Stylz (former member of Blackstreet), and Ray Lavender (an R&B artist previously signed to Geffen).
“Greetings IG! We are GUY 2.0!! Follow us on our mission!!” the group led by Riley, wrote on Instagram. The Grammy-nominated producer confirmed the name change and unveiled the members in the social post.
While music release dates are not yet available, fans will have the chance to experience the revamped gro
The producer-writer is no stranger to creating chart-topping vocal ensembles. The formation of Guy 2.0 arrives 30 years after Riley established both Blackstreet and Guy, pioneers of the “new jack swing” movement. Riley also achieved much success after working producing hits for Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, Keith Sweat, Doug E. Fresh and more.
In an interview with Music Business Worldwide, Riley opened up about his music production process.
“I would have to say I’m a producer and a writer, but I would also say that the melody is king. Everything comes from the melody, which is from the songwriter. For example, No Diggity, I came up with the melody for that song along with my partner, who’s not with us today, Will Stewart.”
Continuing he added, “and when we came up with the melody, we knew what we had. A lot of people didn’t. When we introduced it to the record label, they didn’t understand it – until my friend Dr. Dre told Jimmy Iovine, you let Teddy know I want to be in the video when he puts this song out.”
I said, “Great, but if he’s going to be in the video, he’s got to give me 16 bars’. And right away, he gave me the 16 bars.”
