Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been suspended for two games without pay by the NFL after confronting a fan during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, the league announced Monday.

The suspension comes as the Steelers prepare for critical late-season matchups and could dramatically affect both Metcalf’s finances and his team’s playoff hopes.

In a statement, the NFL said Metcalf violated league policy that prohibits players from entering the stands or making physical contact with fans on game day. “Players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day,” the league wrote. “If a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable.”

Metcalf was not flagged or ejected during the game. The altercation occurred in the second quarter of the Steelers’ 29-24 win at Ford Field when he approached a fan leaning over the railing. Video showed Metcalf grabbing the fan’s shirt before swinging his arm toward the man’s head. Officials did not see the incident during live play.

Metcalf plans to appeal the suspension, a league source told ESPN. If the NFL upholds the discipline, he will miss the Steelers’ Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns and their regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fan Denies Alleged Slur

The fan involved, identified as Ryan Kennedy, has denied that he used a racial slur toward Metcalf during the exchange. A Michigan law firm for Kennedy issued a statement Monday saying he “categorically denies” using a slur or any derogatory language, calling such claims “completely false.” The statement also said Kennedy has received harassment and threats since the incident.

Metcalf’s camp has suggested that provocative language was used, but independent verification of what was said remains unclear. No official league review has confirmed specific words exchanged.

The suspension will cost Metcalf his game checks for both contests. Losing two games without pay could also trigger contractual consequences. Sources indicate that up to $45 million in future guaranteed salary from his current deal could be voided if the suspension stands.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin declined to comment on the specifics of the suspension but acknowledged the team’s reliance on Metcalf’s play. “He’s a key part of our offense,” Tomlin said in a brief statement. “We’ll support him through this process.”

Steelers officials said they will adjust their preparation for the next two games, but they have not yet named interim replacements for Metcalf’s role. The team remains in contention for the AFC North title as it heads into Week 17.
