Keke Palmer faced an unusual interruption Friday when a man from the audience unexpectedly proposed marriage during a panel at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival.
The moment occurred during a live recording of Palmer’s podcast session, “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” where she appeared alongside several co-stars from her upcoming film I Love Boosters. The panel was meant to highlight the film’s debut at the annual Austin festival.
Instead, it briefly turned into a tense and awkward scene.
Witnesses said a man approached the stage, dropped to one knee and opened a ring box toward the Emmy-winning performer. Palmer appeared surprised as the audience watched the exchange unfold.
“I can’t marry you, I don’t know you, I’m so sorry,” Palmer said into the microphone as the man remained on one knee. “Is this a prank?”
Security staff quickly stepped in and escorted the man away from the stage while the audience reacted with a mix of laughter and concern.
Unexpected interruption
The proposal happened while Palmer interviewed her co-stars during the panel discussion. The cast included actors such as Demi Moore, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu and Eiza González.
Several panelists looked stunned as the fan interrupted the event.
Videos circulating online showed the man lingering briefly before security intervened. Palmer maintained her composure and tried to calm the room.
“Sorry guys, let’s just take a deep breath,” she told the crowd after the incident. “Much love to you, brother.”
After the interruption ended, Palmer resumed the conversation with her fellow actors and continued the scheduled discussion.
Security response and investigation
Festival officials later confirmed that the man was escorted from the venue and had his credentials revoked. Authorities also arrested the individual on a criminal trespass charge after the incident.
Witnesses reported that the same person had displayed unusual behavior earlier in the day. Some said he had attempted to enter restricted areas before the panel began.
Despite the disruption, Palmer was widely praised online for handling the situation calmly.
Palmer, 32, has built a long career in film, television and music since emerging as a child star in Akeelah and the Bee. She has since earned multiple awards and recognition for her work as an actor and host.
Her appearance at SXSW was part of promotion for I Love Boosters, a crime comedy directed by Boots Riley that follows a group of shoplifters navigating the fashion world. The film premiered at the festival and is scheduled for theatrical release later this year.
The unexpected proposal briefly overshadowed the panel but did not stop the event from continuing.
Within minutes of the interruption, Palmer addressed the audience with a smile and returned to the discussion.
“We’re back,” she said, prompting applause from the crowd as the panel moved forward.
