A United Airlines flight struck a truck while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport, prompting federal investigations and raising concerns about aviation safety.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon as United Flight 169 approached the airport from Venice, Italy. The Boeing 767 descended over the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach. Authorities said the aircraft hit a tractor-trailer and a light pole before landing safely.

The plane carried 221 passengers and 10 crew members. No injuries were reported among those on board.

However, the truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. He was later released, officials said.

Low Approach Raises Questions

Officials said the aircraft was flying unusually low as it crossed above the highway near the runway. The landing gear and underside struck the truck and a nearby light pole.

The falling pole also hit a passing vehicle on the roadway, though no serious injuries were reported.

Flight 169 landed without further incident and taxied to the gate. Airport operations resumed shortly after a runway inspection.

Aviation experts note that the approach path into Newark can bring aircraft close to highway traffic. One expert described the route as requiring “precise piloting” due to tight margins and complex alignment.

Investigations Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the incident. Officials are reviewing flight data and cockpit recordings.

The NTSB classified the event as an accident due to damage to the aircraft. Investigators plan to interview the flight crew and examine approach procedures.

United Airlines said it is cooperating with authorities and conducting its own internal review. The airline has removed the flight crew from service during the investigation.

In a statement, the airline emphasized safety as its top priority. The company said it is working to “understand exactly what occurred.”

Dash camera footage circulating online captured the moment of impact. The video shows the plane passing low overhead before striking the truck.

Despite the dramatic nature of the collision, officials expressed relief that the outcome was not worse.

“This could have been far more serious,” one transportation official said. “We are fortunate there were no fatalities.”

A preliminary report from investigators is expected within several weeks.
