Michael Che was not feeling “The Roast of Kevin Hart.”
“Saturday Night Live” star was slated to perform at the event on Sunday, but had to pull out because of a scheduling conflict with “SNL.” According to Variety, several other comedians also pulled out at the last minute.
Taking to social media. Che shared what he didn’t like about the roast.
“White guys and Black people joke different,” Che wrote. “Black guy roast like, ‘look at this n—- shoes!’ White roasts are like, ‘Slavery, math, slain teens, sex crimes, slurs, family secrets.’ White guys don’t give a fuck about their shoes.”
Che took major issues with the racial humor of roast host Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe. Gillis mocked Hart’s height with slavery and lynching references—admitting the latter took “three weeks of deliberation” to greenlight. Meanwhile, Hinchcliffe leaned into racial humor, sparking online backlash with a controversial joke about George Floyd.
In another post, Che called out the white writers who crafted the material.
“Let’s do a roast celebrating the career of the most successful Black comic in the last 10 years,” Che wrote. “I love that! Who should we get to write it?”
On the next slide, Che included a photo of five white writers hired by Gillis, including Nick Mullen, J.P. McDade, Mike Lawrence, Dan St. Germain, and Zac Amico.
“C’monnnnnnnnn… that’s not funny?” he wrote in the next slide.
Per the credits, 17 writers contributed and were Black inclusing Chris Spencer. Hinchcliffe and Chelsea Handler used their own team of writers.
Airing live on Netflix, “The Roast of Kevin Hart” was the grand finale of the Netflix Is a Joke festival. The three-hour event featured appearances by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Usher, and Tom Brady. Also, Katt Williams, Regina Hall, Cheyl Underwood and several others took the stage.
