Venus Williams is set to return to the clay courts of the French Open for the first time in five years, adding another chapter to a career defined by longevity and resilience.

Tournament organizers confirmed this week that Williams, 45, will compete in the women’s doubles draw alongside fellow American Hailey Baptiste. The pairing earned direct entry based on their combined rankings, avoiding the need for a wildcard selection.

Williams last appeared at Roland Garros in 2021. Her return marks a significant milestone for one of tennis’ most enduring figures, who first competed at the event nearly three decades ago.

Veteran Presence Returns to Paris

The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion will not play singles in this year’s tournament. Instead, she will focus on doubles, a format in which she has enjoyed considerable success.

Williams has won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including two at the French Open with her sister, Serena Williams, in 1999 and 2010.

Her return comes during a stretch of renewed activity. Earlier this year, Williams competed at the Australian Open, becoming the oldest woman to appear in the tournament’s main draw.

Despite early exits in recent singles appearances, Williams has remained committed to competing at the highest level. Following her Australian Open match, she reflected on the experience, saying she was “grateful for the opportunity to be out there again.”

A Career That Continues to Defy Time

Williams’ decision to return to Paris underscores her lasting influence in the sport. She has continued to compete despite injuries and long breaks, including a 16-month hiatus before her 2025 comeback.

The upcoming tournament, scheduled from May 24 through June 7, will feature a unique pairing in Williams and Baptiste. The 24-year-old Baptiste represents a new generation of American tennis, creating a blend of experience and youth on the court.

The two players previously teamed up at the 2025 DC Open, giving them some familiarity entering the clay-court major.

Williams’ presence alone is expected to draw attention in Paris, where she once reached the singles final in 2002.
