Michael is back at number 1!

According to Entertainment Weekly, Michael reclaimed the top spot on both the domestic and global box office charts in its fourth week. So far, the film has brought in $26 million and $83.8 million, respectively. Although the film debuted at No. 1 in mid-March, it was temporarily dethroned by The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, after the sequel lost nearly 400 screens in its third week, Michael surged back ahead—proving that its incredibly loyal fanbase has serious staying power.

Next weekend, the biopic based on “The King of Pop” faces stiff competition from the release of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu at the box office.

The cultural and financial impact of Antoine Fuqua’s Michael biopic has solidified it as a definitive cinematic milestone. Dominating the global box office with over $700 million in its first month, the film shattered records by securing the biggest worldwide opening weekend ever for a music biopic. This massive commercial success underscores the enduring, multi-generational global appeal of Michael Jackson’s musical catalog.

Beyond its financial triumph, Michael is reshaping industry standards for biographical storytelling. By casting Jaafar Jackson, the film lends a rare layer of familial authenticity to the portrayal, while the high-octane recreations of Jackson’s legendary choreography have turned theaters into communal concert experiences. However, the film’s impact is equally defined by the complex cultural discourse it has reignited. Critics and audiences remain deeply divided over the narrative’s focus, sparking intense debates on media accountability, the boundaries of estate-sanctioned legacies, and how Hollywood navigates the personal controversies of iconic figures. Ultimately, Michael has proven that Jackson’s influence remains a potent, polarizing, and deeply captivating force in modern entertainment.

Speaking with Interview Magazine, Jaafar spoke about embodying his uncle’s essence in the film.

“It’s the type of experience that reshapes who you are for the better. To be able to live in those shoes, feel some of what he was feeling, see life through fresh eyes the way Michael did. It was important to feel all those things so I could come from a place of truth, rather than trying to imitate or copy the shape of the moves,” Jaffar said. “ I wanted to learn the meaning behind the move, the essence of it.”
