Grammy-winning R&B singer Monica is mourning the loss of her father, M.C. “Billy” Arnold Jr., sharing the news of his death through a poignant social media tribute Wednesday.

The “Angel of Mine” singer expressed that while she was not mentally prepared for the loss, she found solace in knowing his physical struggles had ended. In an emotional Instagram post, the veteran vocalist shared a series of personal photographs and videos spanning several decades. The collection depicted intimate family moments, including childhood photos of Monica learning to ride a tricycle and a baby picture of her resting on her father.

She accompanied the visuals with a message reflecting on her father’s resilience and his final days. “Dad, I love you, and letting you go I honestly wasn’t prepared for, but I’m happy you are free,” Monica said in her tribute. She noted that her father faced his illness with strength, reminding her that if God saw fit for them to keep living, then they would continue to do so. Addressing the end of his health battles, she added, “No more pain, no more suffering.”

The singer also shared a rare glimpse into her father’s appreciation for her musical career. In one video clip, she asked Arnold to name his favorite tracks from her extensive catalog. He cited her 1998 chart-topping hit “Angel of Mine,” along with the emotional ballads “Until It’s Gone” and “Time to Move On.” The tribute concluded with footage of Arnold in a hospital setting, highlighting the difficult journey the family navigated leading up to his passing.

The announcement sparked an outpouring of support from across the entertainment industry. Peers and long-time friends including Kelly Rowland, La La Anthony and Gabrielle Union were among the first to offer public condolences. Anthony told the singer her heart was with her, while Union noted that she was keeping the family in her prayers during the difficult transition. Music industry legends also weighed in with words of encouragement.

Producer Teddy Riley offered a tribute to Arnold’s legacy, suggesting that his rewards would continue to manifest through the success of his daughter. Other stars including Ludacris, Big Boi and Michelle Williams joined a growing list of celebrities voicing their sympathies.
