Chaka Khan is entering a new chapter of her storied career with the announcement of Chakzilla, her first full-length studio album in more than seven years. The 11-time Grammy Award winner revealed that the project will arrive Sept. 18 and will feature several high-profile collaborators, including Snoop Dogg, Sia and Lenny Kravitz.
The legendary singer also unveiled “Boogie’s in My Soul,” a new dance-pop single featuring Snoop Dogg. The track serves as the second release from the upcoming album and arrives with an energetic music video showcasing the pair performing before a lively crowd.
For Khan, the project marks a significant return since 2019’s Hello Happiness. The singer has described the album as a celebration of resilience, joy and personal growth after years of life experiences and artistic evolution.
A Celebration of Joy and Freedom
“This album is about joy. It’s about freedom. It’s about loving yourself, loving each other, and finding your power no matter where you are in life,” Khan said in a statement announcing the release. “I’ve lived a lot of life since my last record, and I wanted these songs to celebrate that. This music is about being human, feelin’ good, and stepping into our power.”
The title Chakzilla builds on the concept introduced in the album’s lead single of the same name. Khan previously explained that the character is not meant to mirror the destructive movie monster. Instead, she envisioned a larger-than-life figure focused on helping others and repairing what she sees as a troubled world.
“When I was a kid, I really liked the Godzilla movies,” Khan said. “Instead of becoming a monster and just tearing up things, I became sort of a monster of a person who does good things.”
Star-Powered Collaborations
One of the album’s biggest talking points is Khan’s partnership with Snoop Dogg on “Boogie’s in My Soul.” The song blends upbeat dance rhythms with a message of positivity and self-expression. Snoop opens the track with a nod to Khan’s iconic 1984 hit “I Feel for You,” creating a bridge between generations of music fans.
“There’s nothing you can do to ever erase this,” Snoop Dogg said of the song. “It’s in your system, now let it get into your soul.”
The album was created alongside longtime collaborators Sia and producer Greg Kurstin. Sia praised Khan’s vocal ability while reflecting on their work together.
“Working with Chaka was a dream of mine,” Sia said. “She has one of the most distinct voices of our generation and also a wicked sense of humor. Oh how we laughed!”
