Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically killed on Wednesday morning in a targeted attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown. Thompson, 50, was shot multiple times at close range around 6:45 a.m. while entering the hotel for the company’s annual investor conference. He was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Targeted Attack in Midtown Shocks Business Community
“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Every indication points to this being a premeditated, targeted attack.”
Surveillance footage shows the gunman lying in wait near the hotel entrance before approaching Thompson from behind and firing. The suspect, described as a tall, thin man wearing a black ski mask and backpack, fled on an electric bike into Central Park. Investigators believe the weapon used was a 9mm pistol, possibly fitted with a silencer.
Police recovered cryptic messages etched on shell casings at the scene, including the words “Deny,” “Defend,” and “Depose.” Detectives are exploring whether these phrases suggest a motive tied to disputes involving UnitedHealthcare, the world’s largest health insurer.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed he had previously received threats but was unaware of specific details. “I don’t know the exact reasons,” she said. “He mentioned some people were angry, possibly over coverage issues.”
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny noted the assailant demonstrated advanced proficiency with firearms, clearing a jam during the attack. Kenny added, “The evidence suggests the victim was specifically targeted, but the exact motive remains unclear.”
Thompson joined UnitedHealthcare in 2004 and became CEO in 2021. Known as a brilliant leader, his death has left colleagues and industry peers in shock. “He was assassinated in the street going to his investor conference,” said Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks.
The company expressed grief in a statement: “Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
Police have released surveillance images of the suspect and are offering a $10,000 reward for information. The investigation continues as New York enters its busy holiday season, now overshadowed by this tragedy.
