Beyoncé is setting the record straight about one of the internet’s most debated celebrity transformations.
The superstar singer recently shared the personal story behind Jay-Z’s nearly decade-long loc journey and the dramatic hair change that sparked widespread online discussion. Her comments arrived after some social media users questioned whether the rapper’s locs had ever been real following his recent appearance with a full afro.
In a video released through Beyoncé’s hair care brand, Cécred, the singer offered a rare glimpse into her family’s life while documenting the lengthy process of combing out Jay-Z’s locs. The reveal came weeks after the music mogul debuted his new look during a performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. Reports from hairstylists involved in the transformation later confirmed the process took several days and required extensive detangling work to preserve the length of his natural hair.
Rather than focusing on fashion or image, Beyoncé said the origins of Jay-Z’s locs were rooted in family.
“Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time,” Beyoncé said.
“It inspired Jay to grow out his hair.”
She continued by explaining how the decision became a way to help their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, embrace her natural texture.
“The 5-year-old Blue had no idea that her father’s hair had texture like hers,” Beyoncé said. “I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair.”
Rumors Follow New Hairstyle
Jay-Z’s appearance at the Roots Picnic immediately fueled speculation online. Some critics claimed his afro was a wig. Others questioned whether his long locs had ever been authentic.
The discussion spread across social media platforms, where users debated whether someone could realistically transform years of loc growth into an afro without cutting their hair.
Hair professionals quickly pushed back on those claims.
Celebrity hairstylist Letisia Ravelo, who worked on the transformation, said Jay-Z’s hair was entirely natural. She explained that locs can be carefully combed out over time when enough patience and conditioning treatments are used. According to Ravelo, the process lasted six days and involved extensive moisturizing to maintain the health and length of the rapper’s hair.
Experts noted that many misconceptions about textured hair contributed to the confusion. Commentators familiar with natural hair care pointed out that combing out locs is a well-established technique, though it requires significant time and effort.
A Family Affair
Beyoncé described the transformation as more than a hairstyle change. She called it “a family affair,” with Blue Ivy helping during parts of the process alongside professional stylists. The singer also praised her husband’s commitment to hair care over the years.
“Jay took better care of his hair than any person I know,” she said. “He gets his hair washed religiously.”
The emotional story has resonated with many fans because it centers on self-acceptance and representation. Beyoncé said she and Jay-Z wanted their daughter to feel proud of her curls after facing public scrutiny at a young age.
Years later, the hairstyle that began as a father’s gesture of support became part of Jay-Z’s public image. Now, with his locs gone and an afro taking their place, the transformation has sparked a broader conversation about natural Black hair and the assumptions people make about it.
