WBLS celebrates Black History Month with “Game Changers” and this week we're highlighting the
innovator, risk taker and owner of Make My Cake, Aliyyah Baylor.

At the age of 9, Aliyyah became a young culinary entrepreneur, following in the footsteps of her mother. Every weekend she sold homemade cookies from her Harlem apartment to her neighbors and friends. This gave her a hobby that she enjoyed which in turn would later become her livelihood.

Around the age of 18, Aliyyah took on her mother's pastry business that she ran from home. Aliyyah was able to keep the traditional southern tastes she learned from her mom while fusing in a little uptown funk. “I am a Harlem girl,” she proudly proclaims.

Aliyyah has come a long way and is now the proud owner of two bakery locations in Harlem.   “Starting a business in a home is very comforting”, she says, but is very grateful that she was able to take her passion beyond her apartment.

Aliyyah's delicious delights have also struck it big with some well-known celebrity palates. Some of her famous clientele include Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and the cast of Law and Order just to name a few.

Throughout her twenty-plus year career, Make My Cake has been talked about in the New York Daily, New York Post, New York Times Magazine, and Daily Candy. Aliyyah has also made an appearance on Food Network’s Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

Ultimately Aliyyah wants to develop a resource in Mississippi, where her family is from, to grow the fresh ingredients that she uses in her desserts.

Celebrate with us as we recognize Aliyyah Baylor as a Black History “Game Changer.”
