Brittany Renner, star of Basketball Wives, announced in a June 7 interview that her marriage to rapper Kevin Gates officially ended after only 52 days. “We got married April 6 and divorced May 28,” she confirmed.
Renner, 33, explained that their marital decision was influenced by Islamic tradition. “There is a 90‑day waiting period in Islam… you have 90 days to see if you’re pregnant,” she said. “But also… it’s for reconciliation because the law wants you to stay married.”
She added, “During those 90 days, you are not to entertain anybody romantically.” For her, this period served as a self‑reset. “Islam has made my life easier… it’s a nice 90 day reset, just focusing on myself,” she stated.
Following Her Heart with No Regrets
Despite the short marriage, Renner expressed peace with her choice. “I followed my heart,” she said. “I don’t feel like it’s a sucky situation because what is meant to be is always going to be.”
She also reflected on her mindset entering the relationship. “A lot of people… don’t give it their all. But… when you do, you’re at peace with whatever happens because I gave 100 percent.”
Only weeks before announcing the split, Renner publicly praised Gates. At a May 4 event, she called him “the person that I quite literally dreamed of,” calling their time together “so surreal” and praising his inner beauty.
Gates echoed her sentiment, saying they remained focused “in the now,” and that planning too far ahead hindered their presence in the moment.
New Chapter, Reflective Tone
Renner’s announcement underscores both cultural insights and personal growth. As a recent convert to Islam, she embraced those practices seriously. The 90‑day iddah waiting period allowed her to reflect without external romantic distractions.
In sharing her journey, she emphasized authenticity and emotional integrity. “I followed my heart… there’s no stone left unturned and there’s no regret,” she told BET Weekend.
She has no shame in her choice. “Honestly, I don’t think anybody gets married to not stay married,” she said. Instead, she views the outcome as part of destiny.
Renner is also mother to a 4‑year‑old son shared with former NBA player P.J. Washington.
