Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, recently lost her job because of President Trump

According to reports, Trump’s firing of Hayden is the latest in his purge of the federal government. Hayden revealed that she received her termination notice via email from the Presidential Personnel Office.

The email read, “Carla, on behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.”

In 2016, Hayden was appointed to the post by President Barack Obama and was also confirmed by the Senate. During her time there, Hayden was the first African American woman to serve in that post. She was coming up on her 10th year next year, which was set to expire.

This recent firing has the congressional Democrats upset. Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York said, “Enough is enough,” before going on to say that Hayden was a “trailblazer, a scholar, and a public servant of the highest order.”

Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader also spoke out about the firing. “Donald Trump’s unjust decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is a disgrace and the latest in his ongoing effort to ban books, whitewash American history and turn back the clock.”

Robert Newlan, the principal deputy librarian, will serve as acting librarian of Congress until further notice.
