Ella Jones became the first African American and the first woman elected mayor in Ferguson, Missouri. Nearly six years ago the city erupted with protestors demanding justice over the death of Michael Brown, a teenager shot and killed by a white police officer.

Jones secured her vote and made history with 54% of the vote over Councilwoman Heather Robinett, who had 46%.

During an interview Tuesday, “It’s just our time. It’s just me time to do right by the people.” She described the primary election as “one word: inclusion” for Ferguson’s black residents.

According to her staff biography, Jones worked as a pastor, chemist, and a Mary Kay Cosmetics sales director.
