The family of late actor Eric Dane said they were “saddened” after his omission from the Academy Awards’ annual “In Memoriam” tribute, according to reports published Tuesday.
The segment aired during the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Dane, who died in February at age 53 following complications from ALS, was among several notable figures not included in the televised tribute.
A source close to Dane’s family said the omission was disappointing, though not entirely unexpected.
“They were saddened not to see him included,” the source said. “It was a year of profound loss for the industry.”
Omission Draws Reaction
The Academy’s “In Memoriam” segment is a long-standing Oscars tradition. It honors film industry figures who died in the previous year.
This year’s tribute included several prominent names. However, it also left out multiple actors and creatives, sparking criticism online.
Dane was not alone. Actors such as James Van Der Beek and others were also omitted from the broadcast segment.
Fans quickly took to social media to question the exclusions. Some argued that the segment’s limited runtime often leads to difficult editorial decisions.
An Academy source indicated there was no ill intent behind the omissions. The source said time constraints played a role.
Many of those not included in the televised segment were still recognized on the Academy’s official website.
Remembering Eric Dane
Dane built a career spanning television and film over more than three decades.
He was widely recognized for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy.” He also appeared in films such as “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “Valentine’s Day.”
In later years, he gained renewed attention for his role in the HBO drama “Euphoria.”
The actor publicly revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The progressive disease ultimately led to his death in early 2026.
Despite the Oscars omission, those close to Dane said his family found some comfort.
“They understand,” the source said, noting the large number of industry losses over the past year.
The family also expressed appreciation that Dane was included in the Academy’s broader memorial listings.
For many fans and colleagues, his legacy extends beyond awards recognition. His performances and advocacy efforts remain a lasting part of his career.
