Shewarge Alene, who won the women’s race in May at the adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025, has died at the age of 30.
Officials with the Stockholm Marathon released a statement online saying Alene became ill during a training session in Ethiopia. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
According to multiple reports, Alene was training near Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, when she collapsed before being rushed to the hospital, where she tragically died.
Born December 9 in the Addis Ababa region, Alene was one of the most decorated stars of the marathon world, winning 12 of the 27 races she entered. Her personal best of 2:27:26 was set in Cape Town in 2023, per AllAfrica.
According to multiple reports, Alene earned fame in 2010 when she borrowed a pair of running shoes to compete at the Mount Washington Road Race, which she ended up winning with a time of 1:08.21.
After spending her childhood in Ethiopia, she moved to New York, where she launched her racing career. She lived in both New York and Mexico at various times but she was most recently back training in Ethiopia.
Story developing.
