Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) band announcer has issued a public apology after receiving major backlash for insensitive comments he made about Alabama State University’s Honey Beez dancers being, ”the new face of Ozempic.”
During half-time of the game between the two schools, Florida A&M band announcer Joe Bullard called the dance team that performs with Alabama State’s Mighty Marching Hornets as “the new face of Ozempic,” HBCU Gameday reported.
“My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful.
“For that, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt apologies: first and foremost to the ASU Honey Beez, to Alabama State University, to the Alabama State University Marching Band, to Florida A&M University, and to the fans and® supporters of both institutions who were in attendance, or anyone else who heard my words. To anyone who was offended, I am truly sorry.”
Bullard’s remarks were condemned by the president of each university.
Alabama State president Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. released a statement condemning the response. He labeled the announcer’s choice of words as “demeaning” and reminded the dancers that they bring joy to the university.
“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging and demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” he wrote, adding “to have their artistry disrespected after such a performance is unacceptable.”
“As President of this great institution, I stand firmly with the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, and our entire student body.” Speaking directly to the dancers, he wrote, “Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU. Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”
FAMU president Marva Johnson labeled Bullard’s behavior as inappropriate and offensive.
“During the halftime of the Florida A&M University vs Alabama State University football game, an inappropriate and offensive remark was made by a Marching 100 announcer,” she began.
Reactions
“As an HBCU grad and parent of 2 current Rattlers, one of which is a classically trained dancer, I was appalled and repulsed at the insensitive comment,” one person wrote on Facebook. “Bravo to the President for issuing this apology to ASU and the Honey (Beez).
Luther Campbell, a Miami rap legend, community activist and business, offered support for Bullard on social media and believes his friend regrets his comments.
“I stand with my friend Joe Bullard, who I’ve known for over 30 years,” Campbell posted on Facebook Sept. 28.
“I will not forsake him in these difficult times. I know in my heart that he would take back the words he chose, and he deeply regrets them. Joe has given so much to this university and to people who look up to him around the world.
