More than two decades after audiences first followed Nick Persons on a chaotic cross-country trip with two unruly children, Ice Cube and Nia Long are heading back to familiar territory.

The actors are set to reunite for Are They Gone Yet?, a new sequel to the family comedy franchise that began with 2005’s Are We There Yet? and continued with 2007’s Are We Done Yet?. The project marks the first time the pair will return to the series together in nearly 20 years. The film is currently in development and will center on a new chapter in the lives of Nick and Suzanne Persons. This time, the longtime couple will face the challenges of grandparenthood.

The announcement has sparked excitement among fans who grew up with the franchise. The original film followed Nick, a bachelor determined to win over Suzanne, a single mother. His efforts led to a disastrous road trip with her children, Lindsey and Kevin. The family comedy became a box office success and helped establish the series as a recognizable title for a generation of moviegoers.

Nia Long acknowledged the reunion on social media, writing, “This should be fun.” The brief message quickly circulated among fans celebrating the return of the on-screen couple.

A New Generation of Family Chaos

According to reports, the screenplay is being written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana. The story will find Nick facing what may be his toughest challenge yet: becoming a grandfather. While plot details remain limited, the premise suggests the franchise will once again draw humor from family dynamics and generational clashes.

Ice Cube reflected on the franchise’s longevity in a statement announcing the project.

“We built something special with this franchise,” he said. “Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids. Time flies.”

“Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”

The new film arrives as nostalgia-driven revivals continue to attract interest across Hollywood. Studios have increasingly revisited established franchises with built-in audiences. The return of Are We There Yet? follows similar efforts to reconnect with viewers who first discovered these characters years ago.

Franchise Legacy Continues

The Are We There Yet? franchise expanded beyond the big screen after the release of the two films. In 2010, it inspired a television adaptation on TBS starring Terry Crews and Essence Atkins. The series ran for three seasons and introduced the story to a new audience.

The sequel also arrives during a busy period for Ice Cube. The actor, rapper and producer has been developing the long-discussed Last Friday, which recently gained momentum after years of speculation.

For Long, the project adds another notable title to a career that has spanned film and television for more than three decades. Her reunion with Ice Cube gives fans a chance to revisit one of the most recognizable comedic pairings of the 2000s.

A director has not yet been announced, and no release date has been set.
