The 2026 Roots Picnic officially marked a historic new chapter for Philadelphia’s premier cultural weekend. Moving from the TD Pavilion at the Mann to the expansive, lush terrain of Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park, the festival boasted 80,000 attendees on both days in the “City of Brotherly Love.” It was the biggest crowd yet.
Saturday night belonged entirely to a monumental headline set from JAŸ-Z. He reunited with The Roots as his backing band for the first time in over a decade. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of his seminal debut Reasonable Doubt, Hov delivered a masterclass in lyricism, treating the massive crowd to rare, soul-infused arrangements of his early catalog.

During a freestyle, Hov seemed to throw shots at Drake, Kanye West, Nikki Minaj, and Dame Dash.

Marking his first major solo U.S. concert in over seven years, the two-hour, 30-song career retrospective included surprise appearances from Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan, Memphis Bleek, and State Property.
Also on Saturday, there was a tribute celebrating the 50th anniversary of go-go music, alongside standout, crowd-pleasing sets from R&B icon Brandy and hip-hop heavyweights De La Soul.
On Sunday, the legendary Erykah Badu closed out the weekend with a mesmerizing performance with The Roots. She performed her timeless hits like “On & On” and their Grammy-winning collaborative classic “You Got Me.” The second day also boasted highly anticipated sets from next-gen vocal powerhouse Kehlani, a celebratory live-mixtape performance from J. Period featuring Black Thought and Wale, and an exquisite tribute to the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack orchestrated by Adam Blackstone. Also, DJ Jazzy Jeff thrilled the crowd with a smoking hot set
