JAY-Z’s ambitious plan for a casino in Times Square has been blocked

According to NBC New York, a state-commissioned community advisory committee rejected the multi-billion-dollar plan to transform an office tower into a “Caesars-branded hotel, gambling and entertainment complex.”

Along with the vote to not proceed with the project, the plan garnered pushback from the Broadway community. The theatre district stakeholders expressed their concerns about the potential impact of a casino in the area.

Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez expressed her disappointment.

“Thank you to Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams for standing up for NYC,” Perez said. “Unfortunately, not every politician has the courage and foresight to do what’s right for their constituents.”

Marc Holliday, CEO of SL Green, the project’s primary developer and property owner, shares his disapproval of the decision.

“This was a despicable display of cowardice, a complete lack of consideration for all the people who would benefit from this. Go run and hide,” Green shouted to committee members as they left the conference room.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, a supporter of the casino plan, was also critical of the vote by an all-white committee

“We will remember that in the community,” Sharpton said.

Through his Roc Nation company, JAY-Z  has proposed renovating an office tower at 1515 Broadway. The building houses the Minskoff Theatre, home of “The Lion King” musical.

Speaking with City & State New York, JAY-Z shared why Times Square would be an ideal location for the proposed casino.

“Times Square is the heartbeat of New York – a place where millions of people come every year to see Broadway shows, shop, celebrate the new year, and experience the city’s unmatched energy,” JAY-Z explained.

“Our vision is to build a destination that not only attracts visitors but also gives New Yorkers a place they’re proud to enjoy. A casino here doesn’t compete with Times Square – it complements it,” JAY-Z added.
