Searchlight Pictures has decided to drop Jonathan Majors’ film, Magazine Dreams, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, initially purchased for a seven-figure sum, faced delays after Majors’ arrest in March 2023. Despite critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, plans for the movie were put on hold, leading to its removal from the release calendar in October 2023.
Magazine Dreams featured Majors alongside Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page, Haley Bennett, and Harriet Sansom Harris. The film revolves around an amateur bodybuilder’s struggle to find human connection amidst his relentless pursuit of perfection, ultimately pushing him to the brink of a mental collapse. The movie, directed by Elijah Bynum, had producers such as Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros, and Simon Horsman attached.
In addition to the setback with the film, Majors faced another blow as he was fired from the leading role in Dennis Rodman’s biopic. CNN reported that Majors was dropped from the project after being found guilty of assault and harassment.
“I cannot imagine a world where this moves forward with Jonathan,” an unnamed source told the outlet.
The biopic, initially titled 48 Hours in Vegas and acquired by Lionsgate in 2021, chronicled an unusual two-day adventure during the 1998 NBA Finals involving Dennis Rodman and his assistant GM. Lionsgate distanced itself from the film after Majors’ termination, returning the rights to producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood to find a new partner.
Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles, including a guilty verdict for reckless assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend, led to Marvel dropping him from their upcoming films. Majors, known for his role as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), was set to play a significant role in ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty.’ However, the film studio replaced it with ‘Avengers 5,’ signaling a different direction for the MCU.
