Jonathan Majors’ long-anticipated film, Magazine Dreams, has secured a theatrical release date of March 21, 2025, through Briarcliff Entertainment. The announcement follows a series of delays connected to the actor’s legal troubles.
A Complex Journey to Bring Jonathan Majors the Big Screen
Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, Magazine Dreams stars Majors as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder battling physical and mental health challenges. The film explores Maddox’s struggles as he chases his dream of becoming a champion, defying medical advice to stop using steroids despite their detrimental effects on his liver.
“He defies his doctors’ appeals that he stop taking steroids… All this took Killian Maddox down a dark path,” the official synopsis reveals.
The film, which also features Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page, and Harriet Sansom Harris, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023 to critical acclaim. However, its distribution journey took a hit after Majors faced legal troubles stemming from a March 2023 incident involving his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
Originally acquired by Searchlight Pictures, the film was returned to its creators after Majors’ conviction for misdemeanor assault and harassment. Briarcliff Entertainment later stepped in, affirming its reputation for handling controversial projects.
Majors’ commitment to the role was intense, requiring him to consume 6,100 calories daily and train rigorously for over four months. Critics praised his portrayal, with The Hollywood Reporter describing his performance as “magnificent,” delving deeply into the anguish of a man consumed by obsession.
Despite the accolades, Majors’ legal issues affected his career trajectory. He was dropped by Marvel as Kang the Conqueror and lost other high-profile roles, including portraying Dennis Rodman in 48 Hours in Vegas.
Magazine Dreams will open opposite Disney’s live-action Snow White and Warner Bros.’ crime drama Alto Knights. For Majors, the release marks a significant moment as he seeks to rebuild his career.
As Majors told PEOPLE during a recent interview, “It’s a season of joy,” signaling his hopes for a fresh start.
