Actress Kat Graham says her portrayal of Diana Ross was removed from the upcoming Michael biopic, citing unspecified legal issues that altered the film’s final cut.
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is scheduled for theatrical release April 24. It stars Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson and focuses on the singer’s rise to global fame through the 1980s.
Graham said in a public statement that her scenes were removed due to “certain legal considerations.” She added, “Unfortunately, those moments are no longer part of the final cut.”
Legal changes reshape film
Production on the film underwent significant revisions following legal concerns tied to past settlements and portrayals of real-life figures. Those changes resulted in the removal of several characters and storylines, including Graham’s depiction of Ross. (Vulture)
Ross played an important role in Jackson’s early life and career. The two shared a close personal and professional relationship, including their collaboration in The Wiz.
Despite that history, the film ultimately excludes her character. Reports indicate that other figures connected to Jackson were also left out as the script was revised.
Instead, the film shifts focus toward other influences, including Motown founder Berry Gordy, who appears in a more central mentorship role.
The production team has not publicly detailed the specific legal issues involved. However, the film has been shaped by restrictions tied to past legal agreements concerning Jackson’s life story.
Focus on early career
The biopic centers on Jackson’s early years with the Jackson 5 and his rise as a solo artist. It largely avoids later controversies that defined the latter part of his life.
Cast members have defended the film’s scope. They describe it as an intimate look at Jackson’s formative years rather than a full biography.
The project has also sparked debate among critics and fans. Some argue the film presents a limited view of Jackson’s legacy, while others praise its focus on his musical achievements.
Graham’s casting as Ross had been announced earlier in production, generating interest among fans eager to see the dynamic portrayed on screen. Her absence has since drawn disappointment online and renewed attention to the film’s editing process.
The actress did not indicate whether her performance could appear in future releases or a potential sequel. Producers have hinted that unused material may still be revisited in later installments.
