Lauryn Hill has responded to a lawsuit filed by her former Fugees bandmate, Pras Michél, who has accused her of fraud and breach of contract over their canceled 2023 tour. In a lengthy statement, Hill called the claims “baseless” and expressed disappointment in the legal battle.
Pras Michél’s lawsuit, filed on October 1, claims Hill mismanaged the 2023 world tour and rejected profitable offers. He alleges the tour was a “devious attempt” by Hill to profit, further accusing her of having “narcissistic tendencies.” Michél says the tour failed due to bloated expenses and poor marketing.
Hill Defends Her Actions
In response, Hill firmly denied the accusations, stating that Pras was in fact given a $3 million advance for the tour, primarily to help with his legal fees. She added, “Wyclef and myself deferred our full advances to make sure he had what he needed and was able to go.”
Hill explained that the 2023 tour was initially planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her acclaimed album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, whether or not the Fugees were involved. She claimed that Pras was included in the tour to assist him financially, noting that she covered most of the production expenses.
“He was advanced overpayment for the last tour and has failed to repay substantial loans extended by myself as an act of goodwill,” Hill stated. She also accused Pras of breaching the agreement to repay these loans.
Ongoing Legal Troubles for Pras
Michél, who was found guilty in 2023 of illegally funneling money to Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign, has been facing serious legal issues. Hill referenced this, saying she was “compassionate” towards his struggles but maintained that she is not responsible for his legal troubles.
Despite the legal dispute, Hill concluded, “It’s disheartening to see Pras in this position, but I will always remain compassionate toward him.” The lawsuit represents the latest chapter in the Fugees’ tumultuous history, further straining the once-iconic group.
