Macy Gray, known for her hit single “I Try,” recently made headlines with her unconventional relaxation methods. During the premiere of MTV’s The Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, Gray revealed her preference for substances like cocaine and alcohol over more traditional healing practices.
Macy Gray’s Drug of Choice
Gray was candid about her disdain for what she termed as “hippie sh*t.” “I just don’t do the hippie sh*t,” Gray stated. “Like I live in LA, that’s hippie kingdom. If I’m healing, that’s not how I do it.” This sentiment was echoed when she described her preferred methods of unwinding. “Like cocaine and a couple shots. Get those edibles down my throat and I’m good, girl. Then order me a pizza and I’m straight. I don’t need all that sh*t; I’m good.”
Gray’s comments came during an episode where celebrity contestants were taught breathing techniques in the Colombian mountains. Besides Gray, the show features Chet Hanks, O.T. Genasis, Tyler Posey, Ally Brooke, Kim Zolciak, Johnny Weir, and Josie Canseco.
Gray’s openness about her drug use was not unique among her castmates. Chet Hanks, son of actor Tom Hanks, also spoke about his struggles with cocaine addiction. In a recent episode of Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk podcast, Hanks described himself as a “f**king cokehead.” “That’s my drug of choice,” Hanks admitted. He also shared that his usage was so excessive that even other cocaine users had to tell him to “chill.”
Participating in a reality show was a new experience for Gray. Speaking about her time on the show, Gray told US Weekly, “It was definitely new for me. I haven’t had roommates in a really long time. I knew who everybody was but I didn’t know anybody personally.” This season promises to offer viewers a raw and unfiltered look into the lives of its celebrity participants.
The Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets airs new episodes on MTV every Tuesday at 9 P.M. ET.
