The film, originally set at Universal Pictures, faced numerous challenges during its development phase. A source mentioned, “You have 40 years of success, and it’s very hard to put that into one movie.”
The singer shared a series of photos on Instagram, showing her working on a script titled “Who’s That Girl,” a nod to her 1987 song and film. The script is being co-written by Madonna and Erin Cressida Wilson. Erin joined the project after Diablo Cody stepped away. In her post, Madonna stated, “I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this… OKAY. (Story of my life.)”
Madonna’s Biopic Resurrected After Long Hiatus
Julia Garner remains the frontrunner to portray Madonna. Garner was chosen after an intense audition process that involved rigorous choreography sessions. Other hopefuls, including Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demie, also participated. Entertainment Weekly confirmed Garner’s continued attachment to the project.
The biopic will cover Madonna’s illustrious career spanning over four decades. The initial plan was to produce a single film, but there were discussions about splitting it into two movies or a miniseries. However, these ideas did not materialize. Amy Pascal is set to produce the movie.
Following the pause in the biopic’s production, Madonna faced a serious health scare. She suffered a “serious bacterial infection” in June 2023, leading to the postponement of her Celebration Tour. After recovering, Madonna resumed her tour in October 2023, performing in cities like London, Paris, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and more.
