R&B singer Mario has publicly addressed recent online accusations that he does not like Black women. He pushed back in an Instagram Story statement, calling the narrative “slander” and affirming his support for Black women.

“I’m so tired of the black women slander in the comments about how I don’t like black women and how black women aren’t loved!!” Mario wrote. “If you’re making these comments, I’m convinced YOU have a problem with black women.”

He followed that up with a direct affirmation: “Black women are loved and needed.”

The accusations stem from emotional reactions on social media after Mario revealed his girlfriend, Esmeralda Rios, is Latina and expecting their first child. Some fans interpreted his personal choice of partner as evidence of disfavoring Black women.

Critics felt betrayed, saying he has long marketed his music to Black women. One comment read: “He sings to us, profits off of us, but doesn’t build with us.” Another user asserted: “We’ve been holding you down for 20 years, Mario, and THIS is who you give a baby to?”

Supporters, however, have defended his right to choose a partner freely. “Y’all mad at Mario for loving who he loves? Please,” one fan responded. Others commented: “Love is love. If you were a real fan, you’d be happy that he found someone.”

By taking to social media, Mario seemed intent on halting the growing speculation. He called out the critics rather than ignoring them.

While some reactions remain hostile, others have softened. The discourse highlights deeper tensions between artists’ personal lives and fan expectations.

At press time, Mario has not offered further comment beyond his Instagram story. It remains unclear whether he plans a more formal statement.
