Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans revealed that a final promise made to his late father served as the emotional catalyst for the upcoming Wayans family reunion in “Scary Movie 6.”
The latest installment of the parody franchise is scheduled to hit theaters on June 5, marking the first time the brothers have collaborated on the series in over two decades. In a recent interview with Variety, Marlon reflected on a poignant conversation he had with his father, Howell Wayans, shortly before his passing in 2023.
Howell, who spent several weeks in the hospital, urged his sons to set aside their individual schedules to create together once more. Marlon said his father believed the siblings “make magic together” and explicitly asked for one last collaboration. “My father put his hand out, and I shook it and promised him that I would make this happen,” Marlon said. He noted that the reunion feels like a “complete” moment for him personally.
Despite the brothers building successful independent careers and moving at different professional speeds, the desire to honor their father’s legacy ultimately brought the team back to the writers’ room. The reunion is a significant milestone for the Wayans family, who were instrumental in launching the original “Scary Movie” films in the early 2000s. The franchise became a box office phenomenon by spoofing popular horror tropes and pop culture trends.
Marlon joked about the difficulty of keeping the group aligned, comparing the brothers to the R&B group New Edition but noting they are essentially “four Bobby Browns.” “Scary Movie 6” will continue the tradition of lampooning recent horror hits, with targets reportedly including “M3GAN,” “Terrifier” and “Sinners.” The production is leaning heavily into nostalgia, bringing back fan-favorite original cast members Anna Faris and Regina Hall to join Marlon and Shawn Wayans on screen.
The production also features a blend of veteran talent and new faces, including Damon Wayans Jr., Anthony Anderson and popular streamer Kai Cenat. Fans have eagerly awaited the film since a teaser trailer released by Paramount Pictures earlier this year hinted at the return of the franchise’s signature irreverent humor.
The film’s June release is expected to be one of the summer’s most anticipated comedy events, following years of fans calling for the original creators to take back the reins of the series.
