Mel B is reflecting on one of the most difficult moments from her years with the Spice Girls. The singer recently revealed that the hardest memory from her time in the chart-topping group was learning that Geri Halliwell had unexpectedly left the band in 1998.

The revelation came during a recent interview, where Mel B looked back on the highs and lows of the Spice Girls’ career. While the group enjoyed worldwide success, she said one event stands above the rest as the most painful.

According to Mel B, the news arrived on May 29, 1998, which also happened to be her birthday. The timing made the announcement especially emotional. She said she struggled to understand why Halliwell had decided to walk away from the group without warning.

Halliwell, known to fans as Ginger Spice, announced her departure during the height of the Spice Girls’ global popularity. The group had become one of the biggest acts in music after releasing hits including “Wannabe,” “Say You’ll Be There,” and “Spice Up Your Life.”

Her exit shocked fans around the world. It also forced the remaining members to continue promoting music and touring as a four-piece.

Despite the difficult chapter, Mel B acknowledged that time has brought a different perspective. She said the members have since discussed what happened and now better understand the circumstances surrounding Halliwell’s decision. Halliwell previously cited exhaustion, creative differences, and growing dissatisfaction as factors that contributed to her departure.

Looking Back on the Highs of Girl Power

Although Mel B identified Halliwell’s departure as her worst Spice Girls memory, she also shared several moments she remembers fondly.

Among her favorite experiences was spending time with Britain’s Princes William and Harry when they were children. She recalled visiting Kensington Palace with the group during the height of Spice Girls mania. Another standout memory included performing at Wembley Stadium, while meeting Nelson Mandela also remains one of the defining moments of her career.

More than 25 years after Halliwell’s departure, the Spice Girls remain one of the most influential girl groups in pop music history. The band reunited for several performances over the years, including the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony and a successful 2019 stadium tour. Although Victoria Beckham did not participate in the latter, the group’s legacy has continued to resonate with longtime fans.

Interest in the Spice Girls has grown again as the group celebrates the 30th anniversary of its breakthrough hit “Wannabe.” Fans have continued to speculate about another reunion, fueled by recent interviews from several members discussing their shared history and future possibilities.
