Brandon Clarke, a forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, has passed away. He was 29.
According to ESPN, “LAPD sources confirmed to ABC News that Clarke was found dead from a possible drug overdose on Monday in a home located in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.” When law enforcement arrived on the scene, narcotics and other paraphernalia were found at the scene. There was no evidence of foul play.
In an official statement, the Grizzlies said they were “ heartbroken by the tragic loss” of Clarke.
“Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten,” the team said.
THE NBA PAYS TRIBUTE TO CLARKE
NBA commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement offering his condolences on behalf of the league.
“As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate. And a leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” Silver said. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization.”
“This is an incredible loss for the brotherhood,” the National Basketball Players Association added. “We will remember Brandon not only for the immense joy he brought to so many throughout his career, but for the genuine friendships he built far beyond basketball.”
CLARKE SPENT HIS ENTIRE CAREER WITH THE GRIZZLIES
After a standout college career at Gonzaga, Clarke made an immediate splash in the professional ranks. Drafted by the Grizzlies, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020. He became the first player in NBA Summer League history to win both the League MVP and Championship Game MVP titles.
Over 309 career games with the Grizzlies, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and shot an impressive 60.5% from the field.
