A familiar face from hip-hop and television is heading to Hillman College. Method Man has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to A Different World, adding new energy to a revived cultural staple.

Netflix confirmed the casting this week as production on the series wrapped in Atlanta. The sequel continues the legacy of the original sitcom, which aired from 1987 to 1993 and followed students at a fictional historically Black college.

Method Man, born Clifford Smith Jr., will portray Coach Coles, a new character in the Hillman universe. His addition marks one of the most high-profile castings announced for the project so far.

The Grammy-winning artist has built a parallel career in acting, with roles in television dramas and films spanning decades. He is widely known as a member of the Wu-Tang Clan and for performances in series such as “The Wire.”

A New Generation at Hillman

The sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. She arrives at Hillman College to begin her own journey while navigating the expectations tied to her family name.

The show will consist of 10 half-hour episodes and aims to balance nostalgia with modern storytelling. Showrunner Felicia Pride leads the project, with original producer Debbie Allen returning to direct and produce select episodes.

In a statement about the production milestone, Pride said, “I’m so excited for the world to see the magic we’ve been creating together.”

The reboot will explore contemporary college life while maintaining the spirit of the original series, which broke ground in its portrayal of student experiences at historically Black colleges.

Familiar Faces Return

Alongside Method Man, several original cast members are set to reprise their roles. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison will return as the iconic couple.

Other returning actors include Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell, helping bridge the gap between generations.

Karen Malina White and Ajai Sanders will also reprise their roles, adding further continuity to the revived series.

Industry observers say the blend of legacy talent and new additions could help the show appeal to both longtime fans and younger viewers.
