The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is officially transitioning to digital platforms following a dominant theatrical run that has brought the film within reach of $850 million at the global box office.
Lionsgate announced Wednesday that the high-profile musical drama will lead its premium digital rollout starting June 9, allowing fans to watch the King of Pop’s story from home. The film will be available for purchase at $24.99 on major streaming services, including Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube Movies & TV and Fandango at Home. For those looking for a shorter viewing window, a 48-hour rental option will be offered at $19.99.
The digital launch precedes a physical media release, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions scheduled to hit store shelves on July 14. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the PG-13 film features a breakout performance by Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the late music icon. The casting choice notably kept the role within the family, as Jaafar is the son of Jermaine Jackson.
The narrative spans from Jackson’s early childhood with the Jackson 5, where Juliano Valde portrays the singer, through the heights of his solo career during the 1988 “Bad” world tour. The casting includes several Academy Award nominees and industry veterans. Colman Domingo and Nia Long play the Jackson family patriarch and matriarch, Joe and Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller also stars as John Branca, the attorney and manager who played a pivotal role in Jackson’s professional life.
“Michael Jackson’s big-screen story is heading home while still proving its power at the global box office,” Lionsgate said in its announcement.
