Former heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson, is in hot water once again. Tyson was accused of raping a woman in the early 1990s in a new civil suit.

The suit was filed early January in the Albany County Court. A New York law temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on sexual abuse in December, opening the door for this suit to be filed. The Adult Survivors Act gives sexual assault victims a one-year window to file lawsuits over assaults that happened years or decades ago.

The woman filing the suit remained anonymous due to Tyson’s celebrity status. She alleged Tyson met her in a nightclub in Albany. She explained that she was with a friend, who left to pick up her car. When the woman got into the limousine, she reports, he began kissing her. She repeatedly told him to stop then he “violently raped” her.

The woman is suing for $5 million and says that she has suffered from “physical, psychological and emotional injury” in the years since then. The suit does not specify the date of the attack but says that it happened in the early 1990s.

Mike Tyson’s Past With Sexual Assault

The alleged attack was around the same time Tyson was accused of rape in Indianapolis by beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington. He was convicted of raping Washington on Feb. 10, 1992. The boxing champ was initially sentenced to six years in prison but was released on parole after three years. He returned to the ring in 1996 and continued his boxing career.

Tyson’s former wife, Robin Givens, said in divorce papers that their late-1980s marriage was characterized by “unprovoked rages of violence and destruction.” Tyson’s second wife, Monica Turner, filed for divorce in 2002. This following accusations of adultery during their marriage. Tyson married his third wife Monica Spicer in 2009.
