R&B singer Ne-Yo is opening up about his unconventional love life, saying it works better than many might expect.
The Grammy-winning artist recently discussed his polyamorous relationship, describing it as structured, honest and rooted in mutual respect. He said the dynamic includes multiple partners who all understand and agree to the arrangement.
“It’s not as difficult as you would think,” Ne-Yo said during a recent podcast appearance.
The singer, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, said the relationship is less about physical assumptions and more about emotional connection and communication. He emphasized that many people misunderstand the concept.
“People hear it, and they instantly go to sex,” he said. “It’s community above anything else.”
A Focus on Honesty and Structure
Ne-Yo said his approach to relationships changed following his highly public divorce from Crystal Renay. That experience shaped his commitment to transparency moving forward.
“After my very public, very ugly divorce… I made the decision that I was never going to tell another lie,” he said in a separate interview.
He explained that he introduced the idea of a polyamorous relationship openly to one partner before expanding it. Each person was given the choice to participate.
“Everybody chose to stick around,” he said.
Ne-Yo has described the arrangement as a single relationship involving multiple people, rather than separate romantic partnerships.
“I’m not in three relationships. I’m in one relationship with three people,” he said in a previous interview.
He added that maintaining balance requires effort, including making time for both group and individual connections.
Public Reaction and Personal Confidence
Despite his confidence, Ne-Yo acknowledged that his lifestyle has drawn criticism and even affected his career. He said some professional opportunities have been lost due to public perception.
“There’s deals that I missed out on because they’re like, ‘We don’t know if we can get behind the whole polyamorous [thing],’” he said.
Still, the singer defended his choices, noting that all participants are consenting adults. He rejected claims that the arrangement is harmful or disrespectful.
“Degrading to who? I’m not lying to nobody. Everybody is here by choice,” he said.
Ne-Yo also described his household as a supportive environment, emphasizing unity among his partners and their children.
“We are a family. We love each other, and it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.
