zThe legendary R&B group New Edition is looking toward the future with optimism despite being excluded from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2026. The institution announced its eight newest honorees on Tuesday, leaving several high-profile nominees on the sidelines for another year. The 2026 induction class features a diverse range of talent including Sade, Billy Idol, Wu-Tang Clan and Luther Vandross.
These artists emerged from a competitive pool of 17 nominees that spanned various genres such as soul, rock, pop and Latin music. However, the final list notably omitted several global icons, including Mariah Carey, Shakira, Lauryn Hill and New Edition.
New Edition’s omission was particularly surprising to many industry observers given the group’s dominant performance in the fan-vote portion of the selection process. In a joint statement released shortly after the announcement, the “Can You Stand the Rain” singers expressed deep gratitude to their supporters while maintaining a resilient posture regarding the outcome. “That’s love, and we felt every bit of it,” the group said in the statement. “Yeah, we didn’t get inducted this year, but don’t get it twisted… we’re just getting started.”
The group also acknowledged that the path to induction is often a marathon rather than a sprint. They pointed to the Dave Matthews Band as a precedent, noting that the rock group was nominated for six consecutive years before finally receiving the honor. This perspective seems to have fueled New Edition’s commitment to the process for the long haul. While celebrating the achievements of this year’s inductees, New Edition made it clear they intend to be back on the ballot.
They urged their dedicated fan base to remain engaged for the next selection cycle, promising to return “stronger and better” in the coming year. “Keep that same fire in 2027 when it’s time to vote again,” the group added. Formed in Boston in 1978, New Edition became a blueprint for the modern boy band, launching the successful solo careers of Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe and Johnny Gill.
Despite their massive influence on R&B and pop music over the last four decades, the group will have to wait at least one more year to see their names etched alongside the greatest in music history.
