The NFL has affirmed its commitment to its partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation despite recent allegations against the rapper. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, faces a civil lawsuit alleging he raped a 13-year-old girl at a 2000 after-party. The lawsuit, initially filed against Sean “Diddy” Combs, was recently amended to include Carter.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the issue during the league’s annual winter meeting. “We’re aware of the civil allegations and Jay-Z’s really strong response to that,” Goodell said on December 11. “From our standpoint, our relationship is not changing, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.”

Roc Nation’s Role in the NFL

Roc Nation, hired by the NFL in 2019, serves as its live music entertainment strategist. The company helps produce high-profile events, including the Super Bowl halftime show, and collaborates on the league’s Inspire Change social justice initiative. Goodell emphasized the value of the partnership, stating, “They’ve been great partners that have provided a lot of value for us.”

Jay-Z has strongly denied the allegations, releasing a statement accusing the plaintiff’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, of attempting to exploit him for personal gain. “These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one,” Carter wrote. “Whoever should commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away. Would you not agree?”

He further criticized Buzbee’s tactics, describing him as a “deplorable human” with a pattern of “theatrics.” Jay-Z also noted the toll the allegations have taken on his family. “My wife and I will have to sit our children down and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he said.

A Continuing Partnership with Jay-Z and Roc Nation

Goodell praised Roc Nation’s contributions to the NFL, highlighting its influence beyond the halftime show. “They’re getting incredibly comfortable with not just the Super Bowl but other events they’ve helped us on,” he said. Roc Nation has also played a significant role in advancing the NFL’s social justice efforts.

As the lawsuit progresses, the NFL remains steadfast in its collaboration with Roc Nation. Goodell concluded, “We know litigation is happening now, but our relationship is not changing.”
