As the remake of “The Color Purple” the musical film is set to be released. Oprah Winfrey is taking a trip down memory lane to when she starred in the original film.
In the 1985 adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel, Winfrey played the role of Sofia and earned an Oscar nomination for it. However, she may earn another one as producer of the film along with Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.
During a recent interview, Winfrey revealed that she only made $38,000 for her role. “I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in ‘The Color Purple,’” she said. “And God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me. They were only offering $35,000 to be in this film, and it is the best $35,000 I ever earned. It changed everything and taught me so much. It is God moving through my life.”
In the new film, Danielle Brooks will play the role of Sofia, a role she has experience in since she played Sofia on Broadway. The film will also star Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., and Fantasia. “To have all of you beautiful Black women bearing witness to the story, as the story moves forward, means so much,” Oprah added. “I believe that what Fantasia has said is true: Everybody who comes to see our film is going to be touched. They will be moved. And they will be healed.”
“The Color Purple” will be in theaters on December 25th.
