Brunson’s Emmy win marked a historic moment, as she became the first Black woman to win in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category in decades. Isabel Sanford was the last to achieve this feat in 1981. This win marked Brunson’s second consecutive year as a nominee in the same category.

As a multi-hyphenate talent, Brunson received additional nominations, including outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for hosting Saturday Night Live. Abbott Elementary was also nominated for outstanding comedy series, with several of her co-stars receiving nominations for their performances on the show.
