Oprah Winfrey has been subpoenaed in connection with a defamation lawsuit filed by Drew Dixon against hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons. Dixon, a former music executive, alleges that Simmons raped her in 1995 and subsequently defamed her by questioning her credibility during a 2023 interview.
Legal Battle Intensifies as Oprah Winfrey Drawn into Russel Simmons Defamation Case
In the interview with journalist Graham Bensinger, Simmons denied any wrongdoing, stating, “I’ve never been forceful in any of my relationships.” He speculated that some accusers might be motivated by a “thirst for fame.” Simmons also referenced Winfrey’s decision to withdraw as executive producer from the 2020 documentary “On the Record,” which detailed allegations against him. He suggested that Winfrey stepped away because “the stories don’t add up.”
Winfrey, however, maintained her support for the accusers. Upon her departure from the documentary, she stated, “First and foremost, I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women. Their stories deserve to be told and heard.”
Dixon’s legal team is now seeking Winfrey’s testimony and related documents to support their case. The subpoena commands Winfrey to “produce the books, records, papers, data, documents, evidences, writings, and all other tangible things.” It also requires her to “give evidence” under oath regarding the ongoing legal proceedings.
Simmons has consistently denied all allegations of sexual misconduct since they first surfaced in 2017. As of now, Winfrey has not publicly responded to the subpoena.
This development marks a significant turn in the legal battle, drawing one of the world’s most influential media figures into the controversy surrounding Simmons. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for all parties involved.
